Choosing where to raise a family on Oahu is one of the biggest decisions you will make. Every part of the island has a different feel, and what works for one family may not work for another. This guide breaks down the neighborhoods that consistently attract families, based on schools, community resources, safety, commute considerations, and overall lifestyle.

We are Kristy and Austin Nakamura with Kristy and Austin Home Group. As parents ourselves raising our family in Mililani, we have firsthand experience with what matters when choosing a neighborhood for your kids and your daily life.

Mililani: Master-Planned Community With Strong Schools

Mililani is where we live and where we chose to raise our family. It is a master-planned community in Central Oahu with six recreation centers, numerous parks and playgrounds, and a strong sense of community. The area hosts regular events like farmers markets and holiday celebrations that bring neighbors together.

Schools in Mililani are part of the Mililani-Waipahu complex, and the area has consistently been one of the more sought-after school districts on the island. Housing options range from single-family homes to townhomes, with prices that are generally more accessible than East Honolulu while still offering a high quality of life.

Mililani is split into Mililani Town and Mililani Mauka, each with different character and price points. For a detailed comparison, read our Mililani Town vs Mililani Mauka 2026 guide.

Kapolei and Ewa Beach: Growing West Side Communities

West Oahu continues to grow rapidly and offers some of the most affordable newer construction on the island. Kapolei has expanding retail, dining, and infrastructure including the Skyline rail, while Ewa Beach provides established neighborhoods with coastal access. New schools are being built to serve the Hoopili development area.

Families moving to West Oahu should factor in the H-1 commute to Honolulu and check school boundaries carefully, as they shift when new schools open. For a deeper look at West Oahu, see our guide to Buying a Home in Kapolei or Ewa Beach.

Hawaii Kai: Waterfront Living on the East Side

Hawaii Kai sits on the southeastern coast of Oahu and offers marina access, waterfront living, and proximity to Hanauma Bay and Koko Head. It is one of the first master-planned communities on the island and attracts families looking for water activities and outdoor recreation. The area has a range of housing from condos to larger single-family homes, though prices tend to be higher than Central or West Oahu.

Schools in Hawaii Kai fall within the Kaiser complex. The neighborhood has strong retail options at Koko Marina Center and Hawaii Kai Towne Center, and families enjoy access to multiple beach parks.

Kailua and Kaneohe: Windward Side Charm

The Windward side of Oahu offers a different pace of life. Kailua is known for its beach town atmosphere, boutique shopping, and access to Kailua Beach and Lanikai. Kaneohe provides a more residential feel with lush mountain views, larger lot sizes in some areas, and access to Kaneohe Bay.

Both areas are popular with military families due to proximity to Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe. The commute to Honolulu via the Pali or Likelike highways is manageable but can be congested during peak hours. Homes on the Windward side tend to require more attention to moisture and mold considerations due to higher rainfall.
